6 Simple Ways to Improve Your Mental Health

While everyone today gives importance to physical fitness and spends an impressive amount of time & money on gymming and dietary supplements, very few pay attention to their mental well-being. Several studies have shown that almost 50 percent of world’s total population experiences a mental health issue at some point in their life. Most of the time, you may be suffering from stress, anxiety or depression and not even realize it. It’s about time you make mental health your top priority. Here are some simple steps tips to maintain a healthy mind.

1. Maintain a Journal

Writing down your feelings, desires and experiences can be a liberating experience in itself. It not only helps in lifting your fears and sorrows but also fuels the creativity within you. Also going through your old journals will definitely bring a smile on your face.

2. Be active

By being inert and physically inactive, you might be risking a decline in your mental state. It is said that a healthy body is home to a healthy mind. Activities like exercise, cycling, jogging help in improving cardiac health, maintaining healthy weight and lowering the risk of any physical disease. Your brain releases feel-good hormones ‘endorphins’ during and after these vigorous physical activities which help in boosting mood and relieving stress.

So, instead of lazing around on your sofa, indulge yourself in any activity you genuinely enjoy, be it dancing, swimming or yoga, and you’ll notice a positive change in your mood.

3. Eat dark chocolate

A powerful source of antioxidants, organic dark chocolate is excellent for overall health. Besides improving blood circulation, it also has many brain boosting benefits. It contains phenylethylamine (also called “the love drug”) which encourages your brain to release feel-good endorphins. Serotonin, which is an instant mood-lifter is another chemical released during eating dark chocolate. So next time you crave for something sweet, treat yourself to a couple pieces of dark chocolate.

4. Tune in some soulful melodies

Listening to songs is a kind of hobby that we all enjoy on daily basis, but more than just a form of entertainment, music is something that connects to your heart. Good music always works wonders when you are having a bad day as it can instantly change your bad mood into a good one.

5. Meditate

When you meditate, you are able to observe your thoughts and feelings, which helps in improving your focus and expand your ability to reason. Mediation is a powerful treatment for relieving stress and depression. This healthy practice is easy and does not require much of your time. Just 5 minutes of meditation in the morning are enough to refresh you mind and give a positive beginning to your day.

6. Spend sound time with your loved ones

Most of the times people bottle up their emotions as they shy away from sharing them with someone. This in turn can result in the person feeling lonely and even more depressed. Opening up about your feelings with others and knowing that there is someone that cares, has a positive effect on your mental state. So instead of sulking alone at your home go out, plan a fun activity or a day out with your friends or family and share your experiences with them.
