Gaming Addiction A Reel or Real Disorder

Is your part-time distraction becoming your obsession? Video games in today’s modern world have become a popular source of recreation. The trip to a virtual world that these games allow has tempted people of all ages be it kids, preteens or adults. While video gaming is a great way to entertain and train your mind, it has its downsides. According to World Health Organization (WHO) compulsive gaming may actually be a mental disorder.

In a recent draft of World Health Organization's (WHO), International Classification of Diseases, due to be published in 2018, gaming addiction has been classified as a serious mental health condition.

Gaming disorder’ as stated by WHO “is characterized by a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behavior, which may be online (i.e., over the internet) or offline.” When a gamer is diagnosed with gaming disorder, they exhibit an ‘impaired control over gaming’ (e.g., onset, frequency, intensity, duration, termination, context) i.e. they are unable to control how long and how intensely they play a video game. This addiction to a virtual universe created by video games has a negative effect on personal life as well as on other daily activities of a person. Despite the negative consequences of this addiction, the sufferer will find it hard to give up gaming. In a way, we can draw a parallel between alcohol & drug addiction and gaming disorder. The report further says that it may take over a year to diagnose these gaming behaviors unless the symptoms are severe and all diagnostic requirements are met.

This official classification of excessive gaming as a mental condition may anger many professional gamers and gaming enthusiasts who simply enjoy playing video games. In fact, there is an argument that playing video games has its own set of cognitive benefits from improving coordination, attention& concentration to enhancing memory and multitasking skills. But before getting all riled up it is important to understand the context of the report. It doesn’t state that everyone who likes playing video game suffers from this disorder. There are many people who play video games without getting addicted to them. Any activity, no matter how worthwhile or useful, when becomes an obsession and starts interfering one’s life, has a possibility of becoming a disorder. Similarly, gaming only becomes a problem when instead of you controlling video games they start controlling you and have an adverse effect on your mental health.

Conclusion
The bottom line to this article is that online gaming is not a beneficial hobby to start when one gets bored. On top of that, there are various disadvantages that can befall you and those around you. Instead of getting obsessed with such addictions, one should start indulging in the hobbies that could be more beneficial in terms of physical and mental health.

One should always think about consequences first before it gets too late.
